JANE AND AATOS ERKKO FOUNDATION GRANTS SIGNIFICANT FUNDING TO MIKKELI MUSIC FESTIVAL
Mikkeli Music Festival has been granted a four-year, total of €400,000 funding for the visits of the London Philharmonia Orchestra and performances of young top conductors during 2023-2026. The grant is significant for the festival's economy and future, and enables the development of the event as well as the cooperation between London and Mikkeli in the coming years.
Mikkeli Music Festival underwent a visible transformation in the spring of 2022 when the collaboration that had continued since the early 1990s with conductor Valeri Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra in St. Petersburg was discontinued. On a short notice, the London Philharmonia jumped in, under the leadership of conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. The 2022 concerts were a success and led to signing a cooperation agreement with the orchestra for their visits to the Mikkeli Music Festival also during 2023-2026.
"We are extremely grateful to the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation, whose grant enables top-level orchestra visits to the Mikkeli Music Festival over the next four summers. The festival is facing a new era, both artistically and administratively, and now we have a more stable financial situation to take this great event to new heights," says Festival Director Mikko Leppänen. The cooperation with the orchestra also has the objective to develop master courses and training activities aimed at promising young music students. From the summer of 2024 onwards, young Finnish musicians will also have the opportunity to benefit from the orchestra's solid professionalism.
In early 2023, the festival underwent administrative changes when conductor Erkki Lasonpalo was appointed Artistic Director of the Mikkeli Music Festival in February, and Festival Director Mikko Leppänen in March. The Mikkeli Music Festival was also selected as the Festival of the Year 2023 within the Finnish music festivals association Finland Festivals.
