Introduction
The closing concert on Sunday at the Parish Church will feature Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's iconic Requiem. This work is one of the composer's most beloved pieces. Mozart was working on the Requiem at the time of his death, and it was completed posthumously by his students.
Most commonly performed version of Requiem in Finland belongs to Mozarts student Franz Xaver Süßmayr. At Mikkeli Music Festival 2025 we get to enjoy the completion of Robert Levin, premiered in the year 1991). Levin is known for being an expert on Mozart's keyboard music and improvisation tradition. Levin has paid special attention on characteristic, orchestration, voice leading and structure, aiming to complete the piece as true to Mozart's original style as possible.
Consert is conducted by Viennese Mozart-specialist Christoph Koncz who served over 15 years as principal second violin of the Vienna Philharmonic before pursuing a carreer as a conductor. Lead by Koncz are Philharmonia Orchestra and one of the top mixed choirs in Finland, Dominante.
Christoph Koncz is highly acclaimed, and this season marks his second as Music Director of Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse, while he continues his tenure as Principal Conductor of Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein.
As soloists we have hear mezzosoprano Maiju Vaahtoluoto and basso Matti Turunen, whom are both known from the Finnish National Opera, as well as Michael Laurenz, a star tenor from Vienna. As soprano performs Aurora Marthens who is internationally in demand and known from her roles in the Vienna State Opera. In autumn 2024 Marthens was rewarded the second place and the audience award in international ARD-competition in Munich.
