Maiju Vaahtoluoto is a mezzo-soprano originally from Savonlinna, who made a successful debut as Ulrica in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera at the State Theatre of Oldenburg in Germany during the 2019–2020 season. At the same theatre, she performed in Wagner’s Ring cycle from 2019 to 2024, singing the roles of Flosshilde, Schwertleite, and the First Norn.
In the 2018–2019 season, she was engaged at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where she appeared in twelve roles, including Maddalena (Rigoletto), Mary (The Flying Dutchman), and Filipyevna (Eugene Onegin). She returned to the Deutsche Oper in spring 2023 as the Messenger in Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane, a role she also sang in the Netherlands with Nederlandse Reisopera later that year.
Vaahtoluoto is a frequent presence on Finnish opera stages. Her 2024–2025 season includes appearances in Kokkonen’s The Last Temptations at the Tampere Opera and Savonlinna Opera Festival, as well as Sallinen’s The Horseman at the Finnish National Opera.
She is also an accomplished interpreter of lied and sacred music. As a soloist, she has performed with several leading Finnish orchestras, including the Finnish National Opera Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic, the Tampere Philharmonic, and the Kuopio City Orchestra.
Vaahtoluoto won the Kangasniemi Singing Competition in 2016 and has received awards from the Martti Talvela Foundation and the Finnish Wagner Society. She holds degrees in vocal performance (Sibelius Academy, 2017) and vocal pedagogy (Centria University of
Applied Sciences, 2013).
