Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975): Cello concerto No. 1 E-flat major Op. 107
Modest Musorgski (1839–1881): Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Maurice Ravel)
Introduction
Modest Mussorgsky originally composed the 15-piece Pictures at an Exhibition for piano, inspired by the drawings and watercolors of his artist friend Viktor Hartmann. Shortly after Hartmann's death, an exhibition of his works was organized, which listeners can revisit through Mussorgsky's piece. The recurring Promenade theme between the sections ties the pieces together, as the listener metaphorically walks from one picture to the next.
The concert's soloist, performing Shostakovich's Cello Concerto, is Senja Rummukainen. Over the past decade, Rummukainen has grown from a promising young cellist to a central figure among Finnish musicians. She gained national recognition in 2014 by winning the Turku Cello Competition. Just a year later, she was awarded as a finalist at the Guilhermina Suggia Awards in Porto, and in 2019, she reached the finals of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in St. Petersburg.
The program will be completed in the fall of 2024.
