Introduction
Viva Verdi! The closing concert presents music through which citizens have wanted to express their will, both in Finland and in Italy. The Overture from Giuseppe Verdi’s The Force of Destiny, was also performed in the early 1990s at the first major church concerts of the Mikkeli Music Festival.
Though composed on the shores of Rapallo, Italy, Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 (1901) was interpreted by contemporaries to portray the Finnish people’s struggle for freedom under the oppression of Russian rule.
The concert, conducted by Artistic Director Erkki Lasonpalo, features the young Finnish violin sensation Lilja Haatainen as soloist. Like Niccolò Paganini, whose extraordinary abilities were once considered almost supernatural, Haatainen astonishes audiences with her remarkable talent.
The performance of the soloist has been supported by the Foundation of Assi and Erkki Liikanen of Kansan Sivistysrahasto.
Duration about 2 hours, includes 30 min intermission
Suur-Savon Sähkö signature concert.
