Introduction

The Licence to Fall in Love concert literally gives you permission to fall in love with the evening's pieces!

The concert begins with Lotta Wennäkoski's Verdigris, which is the composer's own allusion to Sibelius's A Fairy Tale. The Sibelius theme continues with the Suite of Sibelius's Songs, arranged by Jaakko Kuusisto. The evening ends with Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, which is known to be one of the composer's most successful compositions.

The concert is conducted by the new Artistic Director of the Mikkeli Music Festival, Erkki Lasonpalo. The concert's soloist, soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä, is one of Finland's most promising lyrical-dramatic sopranos. In addition to her numerous international successes in opera roles, she is known as an artist with a wide-ranging lied repertoire. In the spring of 2013, Värelä graduated with excellent grades as a Master of Music from the Sibelius Academy's opera program, and she won both the Timo Mustakallio singing competition at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in the summer of 2011 and the Kangasniemi singing competition in the summer of 2009.
