Program
The "Jazz x Classical" concert offers a delightful selection of pieces by well-known jazz composers (Dave Brubeck, Billy Stayhorn) that draw inspiration from classical music, jazz-infused interpretations of classical saxophone works (Dmitri Shostakovich, Jean Francaix), as well as Valjakka’s own colorful compositions. The concert’s beautiful melodies are further enhanced by captivating improvisations and intriguing electronic effects.
Introduction
Juho Valjakka is one of the most sought-after young Finnish jazz pianists. Valjakka, who received an Emma Award nomination for his debut album, has performed over the years with several top ensembles (including the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and Lassy–Eskola Nordic Stew) at the biggest domestic festivals.
Jenni Peltoniemi, a saxophonist and saxophone teacher based in Mikkeli, is a versatile musician, composer, and all-around artist. Over the course of her career spanning more than twenty years, she has worked extensively in various ensembles and projects where classical, pop, and modern electronic music converge. She has performed, among other groups, with the Helsinki Saxophone Orchestra and the experimental electroacoustic ensembles Tasan6 and Saxposition.
