The Vivo Symphony Orchestra is Finland’s only nationwide youth symphony orchestra. Its players are from the ages of 13-25 and are from about 50 municipalities in Finland. Vivo’s players are selected in yearly auditions.
Most of the players are talented high school-age music students, for whom Vivo provides the opportunity to play under professional conductors and alongside professional musicians acquiring the skills and experience necessary for a career in the music industry. Vivo is free of charge for the players, so it is possible for everyone. The orchestra has performed regularly in different parts of Finland and has also done tours abroad.
Vivo has operated continuously since 1986. Over 700 people have played in its ranks, and more than 70 percent have become professional musicians.
The artistic directors of Vivo have been for example Mikko Franck (1997–99), Tibor Bogányi (2000–2002), and Esa Heikkilä (2003–2016). Since 2019, the artistic director has been conductor Erkki Lasonpalo.
Vivo’s operations in 2024 are supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Wihuri Foundation, the Olvi Foundation and Mikko Franck.
