Petri Komulainen

Petri Komulainen is a highly sought-after conductor, horn player and pedagogue. He is known as a versatile and innovative musician who is equally at home with symphonic repertoire, opera, and chamber music, both as a conductor and an instrumentalist. Contemporary music and organic collaboration with composers are particularly close to his heart. This has resulted in several significant projects, such as Harri Ahmas’ opera Käärmesormus, Paavo Heininen’s concerto Aiolos, and numerous premieres during his tenure as Artistic Director of the Zagros Ensemble.

Komulainen has recorded as both a conductor and instrumentalist for several labels, including BIS, Alba, Toccata Classics, Pilfink, and IFO. He regularly appears as a guest conductor with numerous orchestras in Finland and abroad. His long-standing collaboration with composers and contemporary music professionals stems from his role as the Artistic Director of the Zagros Ensemble since 2013. The ensemble is one of Finland’s oldest and most established contemporary music groups, regularly appearing at festivals and on Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) national radio. Komulainen has been a Lecturer in Wind Orchestra Conducting at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, since 2016, and he served as the Associate Principal Horn of Sinfonia Lahti from 2001 to 2023.

Petri Komulainen studied horn performance and conducting at the Helsinki Conservatory, the Sibelius Academy, the Freiburg University of Music in Germany, and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. He graduated with honors from the Sibelius Academy in 2008, earning a Master of Music degree from both the Performance and Orchestral Conducting programs. He was awarded third prize in the International Jorma Panula Conducting Competition in 2006.
