Eero Marttila is a versatile musician whose instrumental expertise extends beyond double bass and electric bass to include the bass viol and bass recorder. His versatility is also reflected in the wide range of musical styles he performs, feeling equally at home in early music ensembles playing on gut strings, premiering contemporary compositions, and performing progressive metal.
Marttila graduated from the Sibelius Academy with a Master of Music degree in 2021, having studied classical double bass under Panu Pärssinen and Lasse Lagercrantz. His studies were enriched by numerous masterclasses and an exchange year at McGill University in Montreal. He further expanded his expertise in early music at Novia University of Applied Sciences, where he specialized in viola da gamba.
Marttila serves as Associate Principal Double Bass with the Vaasa City Orchestra. During his years as a freelance musician, he performed with nearly every professional orchestra in Finland. He also appears regularly with the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, and Wasa Consort.
In the field of contemporary music, Marttila has performed with Uusinta Ensemble and in various collectives assembled by composer and musician Lauri Supponen
